Who being upon Oath severally say and first the said
Tho. Broughton< no role >
saith that a Person now present who calls
himself Thomas Johnson< no role >
hath knowingly & designeely
by false pretences obtained Twenty one Gallons of
Brandy with Intent to Cheat and Defraud himself
and Chas Wenman< no role >
his Partner, Contrary to the Statute & William Jones< no role >
for
himself saith that yesterday about seven in the Evening
he was present when sd. Johnson obtained the said
Brandy pretending to be sent for it by [..] one
Evans at the Crown near Sadlers wells
, which pretence
he this Informant by enquiry finds to be false
that he was first directed as the Porter to carry it to
the Bell in Smithfield
but sd.ThomasJohnson going
along with him he pretended that an Islington
Stage
wou'd call at the end of Fleet Ditch
and take it up [..] &
prevailed on Informt. to carry in there and lease it with
him; And this Informant John Mulford< no role >
for himself
saith that happening to be present at the last mentioned
transaction and observing as soon as the Porter was
gone sd. Johnson tear off the direction from the Cash he
imagined some Fraud was intended and therefore Watched sd.
Johnson's Motions and says that he hired and there Porter
and carried sd. Brandy to a house in a Court near
Russell Court Covent Garden
