The Examination of William Athill< no role > and Ann Cockwaine< no role > taken on Oath
the 30th. day of September 1786 before me one of his
Majestys Justices of the Peace for the County of Middlesex

Who Saith That on Saturday the Ninth day of September Instant,
Thomas Wells< no role > came to this Examinants house in Black Eagle Street
in the Parish of Christ Church this Examinant then being in bed
about Eight O'Clock in the morning the street door then being
open, Ann Cockwayne< no role > being then dressed and in the room
with the said William Athill< no role > , Wells came up stairs and
told this Examinant he had go some Property for him
accordingly the said [..] Examinant got up, and Wells
then took out of his Pockett a Quantity of Plate tyed up
in a Handkerchief and delivered into the hands of the said
Ann Cockwayne< no role > , she put the same on the Table this
Examinant Saith that he then weighed the same which
was about Three pounds Ten Ounces and a half and was to
pay him Nine Pounds five shillings and six pence for the
same, Examinant then Paid downdea [..] Nine Guineas
expecting Wells to give him three shillings and six pence
in change but he having no change Wells said that he
was going to Thomas Kings< no role > with half the money and that
he King would call and pay this Examinant the three
shillings and Six pence and then Wells went away
but before he went Examinant asked Wells where the
Plate came from Wells said it came from Horrsey from
a large Swell and he dared say that if they had searched
further they should have got a good deal more property
but they had only searched two Rooms, he said there
was a very large dog which they were Obliged to Poison
before they could do it, Examinant Saith that the Plate now
produced by James Shakeshaft< no role > is the same that was sold to him by
Thomas Wells< no role >
This Examinant Ann Cockwayne Saith That on
Saturday Morning the Ninth of September Instant
Thomas Wells< no role > came to the said William Athills house
above mentioned and asked him to buy some property
and [..] took a Handkerchief out of his Pocket with some
Plate in it and delivered it to her which she put on
the Table, the said William Athill< no role > then being in bed
she desired him to get up and wright it, and that she
saw the said William Athill< no role > pay Nine Guineas to the said
Thomas Wells< no role > out of which he was to receive three
