maketh Oath an whith that on
or about the Thirteenth day of July last he this Deponent [..] being much
Intoxicated in Liquor in some much that he lay down in the Street called half moon
Street
in the Strand
and there fell asleep and as this Deponent was afterwards
Informed when awaked by a Watchman that he had been Robb'd of his Money
and a Gold laced Hat by a person who the Watchman then had in Custody by the
name of Barbara Martin< no role >
and after being carried with the said Barbara martin
to Covent Garden
Watchhouse this Deponent Missing his Hat & upwards
of Twenty Shillings in Money was the next morning carried before Sir
John
Fielding< no role >
before whom the said Babara Martin confessed that she had
taken this Deponent money upon which the said Sir
John Fielding< no role >
bound this
Deponent over to prosecute the said Barbara Martin at the next Ensuing
Session And this Deponent on his Oath further Saith that by the Direction of
the said Mr. Fieldings Clerk he did Attend at Hicks Hall
the first and Second
day of the Session and as he this Deponent then Understood by Mr. Fielding's
Clerk was to answer to his Name only when called on and did accordingly give
a person Six pence to see of his on the said Barbara Martin's name was
incerted in their Books and was by that Person Inform'd there was no such
Names And on the third day of the said Sessions not hearing any thing of
his this Deponents Name or the Name of the said Barbara Martin he went on
his Duty And this Deponent on his Oath further Saith that he did not at
that time know or was he at anytime Inform'd by any person whatsoever
that he was to give Instructions for an Indictment against the said
Barbara Martin for the Felony aforesaid and afterwards was Inform'd that
the said Barbara Martin< no role >
was discharged at the Old Bailey
To the great
Surprize of this Deponent he at that time being totally Ignorant of the proper
Steps he ought to have taken And lastly this Deponent on his Oath
further Saith that the reason of his not prosecuting the said Barbara
Martin< no role >
was not thre' any view whatsoever to shew any favour to her
the said Barabara Martin in the said prosecution but merely
