Southwark

Depositions of Witnesses taken at the
Work house of the Parish of Saint Olave situate in the parish
of Saint John within the Borough of southwark
in the County of Surrey this 20th: day of
August 1793 on view of the Body of
Thomas Strong< no role > now here lying Dead.

Hannah Rearden a Servant [..] to Mr. Edward Spawden< no role >
of the three Compasses in the Maze in the Parish of Saint Olave withinin the Borough of Southwark
in the County of Surrey Victualler maketh Oath that she hath
lived as a Servant in that House about four Months that the
deced who Dept. understood to be a Corn Porter has lodged in
said House about three Months that he slept in the Front
Garrett of said House up three pair of Stairs wherein evere two
Bed in one of which the deced causally slept some times alone and
some times a Young Man< no role > of the name of Peeston with himthat
between seven and eight O Clock on Saturday Night last Dept.
Master asking her for the Key of the deceds Room Dept. recollected
she had left the Key in the Door when she had made the Bed
in the course of that Morning Dept. went up to the deceds Room
and found the Key in the Door the Door quite open and a
person in the Bed wherein the deced used to lye whom Dept.
believes to be the dectedDept. locked the Door and took the Key
down to her Master Mrs. Spawdenthat in about a quarter of
an hour after a Soldier who had been billeted in the House about
five Weeks and who slept in the other Bed in the same Room
with the deced had the Key of the Deceds Room from Dept. and
went up Stairs saying he was going to Bedthat about eleven [..]
O Clock on the Sunday Morning Dept. saw the Soldier standing inthe Soldier came down Stairs into
the Top Room of Dept. Master Home that an alarm had been
made that the deced had hanged himself the Soldier sayed
to several people who were then in the Top Room that he had
left the deced asleep.

of Mr. Spawden abovementioned maketh Oath that she hath known
the deced Thomas Strong< no role > about two Months Dept. used to wash for
him. Dept. and her Husband lodger in the two pair of Stairs front
Room under where the deced slept that about ten O Clock on
Sunday Morning last Dept. thought she heard a Knocking over head
Dept. went up to the deced Room thinking he was not Well Dept
