Depositions of Witnesses taken at London
that is to say [..] Saint Bartholomews Hospital
in the Parish of Saint Sepulchre in the Ward
of Farringdon without in London aforesaid
the 25th: day of July 1791 on view of the body of
George Chapman< no role > now here lying Dead

John Meadows< no role > of No. 35 Water Lane Fleet Street London
Victualler maketh Oath that about the hour of six in the afternoon
of Friday last the 22nd. instt. Dept. being then standing at his own
Door in Water Lane aforesaid a Cart drawn by two Horses belonging
to William Stapleton< no role > of Whitefriars London loaded with Slop
came down Water Lane and passed Dept: that just as the Cart had
passed Dept: he observed a Wooden Bench or Seat which usually
stood at Depts. door fall and that the deced a little Boy Son of
Mr. Chapman who lives a few Doors from Dept. and who had
first before been kneeling at the Bench fell down with the
Bench that the deced fell just before the near Wheel of the Cart
that the driver was at the same time abreast of the Shaft Horse
on the near side that Dept. immediately [..] in order to find
the deced up which he did but not before the near Wheel
had passed over the rightthe One of theLeg of the deced that when
Dept. had taken up the deced [..] he delivered him to as
[..] Woman that came up at the time that at the time the
deced fell there was no person near him that the driver of the
Cart was on the proper side of his Horses that the Horses were
going a gentle pace as Horses usually go when loaded
that the near Wheel of the Cart was so near the Cart stone
as to grind against it in passing, which Depts. says the usually
do in going down Water Lane, it going with a descent one
towards the River and that the pavement is very narrow
on the side of the Street facing Depts. house that the Driver
knew nothing of anything having happened until Depts
called out, when he immediately stopt his Horses
that Dept. saw the deced lying dead in St. Bartholomews
Hospital this Evening
