Depositions of Witnesses taken at the
Parish of Saint John within the Borough
of Southwark in the County of Surrey the
11th: day of September 1790 on view of the
Body of Christopher Wright< no role > now here lying
Dead

Charles Bateman< no role > of London Street Bermondsey in the
County of Surrey Waterman maketh Oath that about the hour
of five in the Afternoon of Yesterday the 10th: instt. Dept. being
then employed loading a Vessel called the Samuel & Sarah of Ipswick Martin Name Robt. Burgess< no role > at Mr. Davies's Wharf in
the parish of Saint John in the Borough of Southwark [..]
to which Vessel the deced belongs that as the deced was employed
in getting a large piece of Mahogany on beard the said Vessel
having an Handspike in his hand for the purpose of pinching
the said piece of Mahogany into a place in the Hold of the said
Vessel [..] one end of the said piece of Mahogany being
lodged in the Hold of the said Vessel and the other end lodged
against the comeings or side [..] of the Hatchway going into the an
Hold of the said Vessel and [..] being suspend by some Ropes belonging
to a Crane on the said Wharf that whilst the deced was so
doing [..] the end of the said piece of Mahogany being then
suspended over powered the deced and fell on the right side of
the deceds head near his Temple that the deced died
immediately thattheas soon as the piece of Mahogany had
struck the deced on his head as before mentioned the deced fell
between the said piece of Mahogany and the Ships Comeings
that he was taken upon Deck and from thence conveyed to
Saint John Workhouse that [..] one Norman Mate< no role >
of the said Vessel and Dept. were in the Hold of the said Vessel
at the time the accident happened and that same happened
accidentally in the manner as before stated.
