Upon Reading a Petition of the Inhabitants of
Bridewell Hospital
and Precinct in the Words and figures following
Vizt. "That the last year your Worships were pleased to allow an
Additional Sum of £36 towards defraying the expences of the poor Watch
Scavenger and other incidental Expences That notwithstanding such
Additional Aid your Petitioners made an over rate of one Shilling in the
pound on all the Inhabitants of the said Hospital and Precinct. That the
Poors rate has been gradually Increasing for several years chiefly owing
to the decrease of Artsmaster and several Houses in the Precinct being pulled
down or in Ruins Uninhabited and not rateable That your Petitioners
have been under the necessity of borrowing £50 to defray the Expences of
the present year Exclusive of the over rate of one Shilling in the
pound and praying the same Additional aid"It is Ordered
that it be referred to the House Committee to consider the same and
report their Opinion thereon to this Court.
