Continued Thursday 20th. June 1765

shall make Particular Inquiry from time to time to Discover if any Dye
All which is nevertheless Submitted to the Judgment of the Court
This Court having duly Weighed and Considered the said Report Doth
Confirm the same And it is Ordered that the Steward of Bethlem Hospital do
Observe the Several Rules and Regulations therein mentioned And that a Copy
there of be Delivered to him by the Clerk of these Hospitals which was done Accordingly.

Upon reading a Memorial of the Grand Committee of Bethlem Hospitals
bearing Date the 19th. Day of June Instant Under the Hands of John

The Memorial and Representation of the Grand Committee
of Bethlem Hospital to whom it was referred by Order of Court bearing Date
the 24th. Day of April last to Enquire what was the Office and Duty of Steward
of Bethlem

That this Committee in Proceeding upon the aforesaid Inquiry have found
and are of opinion that many Rules and Regulations besides the matter
referred to them by the said Order are necessary to be made as touching and
concerning the general Care Conduct and Management of the said
Hospital and the Officers and Servants Employed therein and have
therefore thought fit to represent the same to this Court that such Orders
and Directions may be given as may be thought necessary in that behalf
(that is to say)

As to the Office of Porter

This Committee do find that the Duty and Office of a Porter has been
and is as follows

To be keeper of and to Open and Street the Gates
To receive the Money for the poor at the first Gate

To take an Account in Writing to be Set down in a Paper by every
Workman Employed in the Repairs of this Hospital of each Days Work
and Materials furnished and being done examine and file the same

To keep a Key of the Buttery Door to see there is no Waste therein -
and to Cut out the Meat on Tuesdays and Thursdays

To Attend the Doctor Mondays and Wednesday to give him an
Account of the Men Patients

The Office and Duty of the
Porter of Bethlem Hospital


And We are of Opinion that the following Regulations and
Alterations should be made in the Office of Porter (that is to say)

That he shall be keeper of and Open and Street the Gates and Door
and shall take Care that the Bar Gates on both sides shall be kept street
till Nine o'Clock in the Morning and no Patient Man or Woman Suffered
to go out till that time

That he shall receive all Warrants of Detainer and regularly file
the same

That he shall receive and take an Account of all money paid at
the Door And it is the Opinion of this Committee It will be better to
Collect the Money of all persons coming in rather than going out of the Hospital

That he shall not at any time or on any Pretence Quit his Station
at the Door after the same is Opened any part of the Day without have of
the Steward and his first appointing a proper person to Supply his
Place
