Upon reading a Report from the Comittee of this House bearing date the 30th of January
last under the hands of Edward Holloway< no role > Esqr . Treasurer Mr. John Lee< no role > John Lock< no role >
Esqr . Dr . Richard Rowlinson< no role > and Mr. Deputy Hunt as follows Vizt.At this
Comittee the petition of Ann Arbuthnot< no role > was read (which was referred to them by order
of Crack the 20th. of December last) SettingforthThat the Petitioner by a
former Petition to the Governours SetforthThat she was possessed of a
Lease made by the Governours to John Merryhurst< no role > of certain ground in and near
Wapping Dock Street (alias Gravel lane ) with eight Houses Erected thereon for
forty years from Laday 1751 at £8 per Annam which Lease will repire at
Laday 1755That five of the said Houses on the East Side of Wapping Dock
Street had been Utterly destroyed by the then late fore there and that the other prmise
had been damaged thereby and that she would further Suffer by the Arrears of
rent due from the late TenantsThat the Rebuilding the five Houses
would cost direct double the Sum they were insured at and that she was in no
Condition to do the same unless the Governours would enable her by granting an
Enlargement of her Term that she might borrow money thereonand therefore
Prayed that the Term in being in the said Lease might be enlarged to Sixty one years
which Petition was referred by this Court to a Committee who after having
Viewd the Premisses made their report dated 5th May 1736 (to which the
petitioner Agreed) that upon her Surrending the old Lease and paying the Ground
Rent to Laday then last a New Lease should be granted to her of the Three Houses
that were Standing for the remainder of the Term to come in the old Lease at
£4 P annumand that upon the Petitioners paying a Fine of £50 and
Agreeing to lay out £800 in rebuilding upon the Ground whereon the five Houses
stood the like Quantity of Building as wascontained in the said five
Houses a New Lease should be Granted to her of the Ground whereon the said
five Houses Stood for 61 Years from Laday then last at £4 P Annam with
the like Covenants as are in the old Lease which Report was confirmed by
the Court holden the next day and Leases ordered to be made to the petitioner
Accordingly That the petitioner has paid the said fine of £50 and built first
Brick Messuages on the Ground whereon the five Houses Stood that were
burnt down which havecost her much more than £800But the
Petitioner was mistaken in Alledging that she was intitled to Eight Houses
under the said Lease which comprizes only the five Houses in Gravel lane
that were burnt down and 2 houses on the North side of Wapping Street
one of which formerly the Bull head Tavern and now the [..] is not assigned
to the petitioner and belongs to some other Person so that the petitioner being
intitled but to 6 of the said 7 houses cannot Surrender the said Lease which
