ArbuthnotAnnPetn for
Lease of 5 House at this
(No. 23 NB) referred}

Upon reading the humble petition of Ann Arbuthnot< no role > Setting forthThat
the petitioner by a former Petition to the Governors SetforthThat she was
possessed for a Lease made by the Governors to John Merryhurst< no role > of certain ground
in and near Wapping Dock Street (alias Gravel Lane ) with eight Houses Elected
thereon for 40 years from Laday 1715 at £8 P Ann which Lease will expire
at Laday 1755That five of the said Houses on the East side of Wapping
Dock street had been Utterly destroyed by the then late fire there and that the other
promisses had been damaged thereby and that she would further suffer by
the Arrears of rent due from the late TennantsThat the Rebuilding the
five Houses wold cost almost double the sum they were insured at and that
she was ni no condition to do the Same unless the Governors would enable
her by granting an Enlargment of her Term that she might borronw money
thereonAnd therefore prayed that the Term in being in the said Lease
might be enlarged to Sixty one Yearswhich petition was referred by this Court
to a committee who after having view'd the premisses made their Report dated 5th,
May 1736 (to which the petitioner Agreed, that upon her Surrending the Old
Lease and paying the Ground Rent to Laday then last a new Lease should be
granted to her of the Three Houses that were Standing for the remainder of the
Term to come in the Old Lease at £4 P Annamand that upon the
petitioners paying a Fine of £50 and Agreeing to lay out £800 in rebuilding
upon the Ground whereon the five Houses Stood the like Quantity of Building
as was contained in the said five Houses a new Lease should be granted to
her of the Ground whereon the said five Houses stood for 61 years from Laday then
last at £4 P Annum with the like Covenants as are in the Old Lease which
Report was confirmed by the Court holden the next day and Leases ordered to
be made to thePetitioner AccordinglyThat the petitioner has paid the said
fine of £50 and built five Brick Messuages on the Ground whereon the five
Houses Stood that were burnt down which have cost her much more than £800
But the petitioner was mistaken in alledging that she was intitled
to Eight Houses under the said Lease which comprizes only the five Houses
ni Gravel Lane that were burnt and 2 houses on the north side of Wapping
Street one of which formerly the Bull head Tavern and now the Ship is not
assigned to the petitioner and belongs to Some other Person so that the
petitioner being intitled but to be of the said 7 houses cannot Surrender the
said Lease which mistake happened by the petitioners being intitled To
Two other houses in Wapping Street under another Lease from the Governr:
to the Same Mr. Merryhurst for the Same Term of Years which the petitioner
thought were comprized in the Same Lease with the other Six House
And prayed the Governors tha she may have a Lease of the said five
Houses which she has Now built to comence from Laday 1755 for 42 years
which is equal to the time granted to the petitioner by the before mentioned
order of Court at such a proportionable part of the said Old rent of £8 as the
Governrs. shall think fitIt is ordered that the said Petition be referred to the
Comittee of this House to consider thereof & to report their Opinion thereon to the Court
