Upon reading the humble Petition of Samuel Jackson< no role > Weaver settingforthThat
he servd his Apprenticeship part to John Machin< no role > deceased and the remainder to Thomas Machin< no role >
one of the Artsmasters of this Hospital by Indenture dated ye. 8th. day of May 1722 and by an Order
of this Court the 9th. of October last he was on ye. 16th. day of February last made free of this
City and is set up for himself in his said Tradeat Mr. Balls a Loom maker Duke street
in the Park Southwark And Mr. Treasurer reporting to this Court that the Comittee of
this House on the 18th. of this Instant March inspected the book kept of Apprentices behaviour
and found no Complaint agt. him It is Ordered that Mr. Edward Whitehouse< no role > Mr.
John Neal< no role > and Mr. Wm. Jackson< no role > three of the Governors of these Hospitals or any two of
them be desird to enquire whether the said Samuel Jackson< no role > be set up in his said Trade and
of his hopefullness therein and to make their Report to the next Court.

Apprentice made free


At this Court Caleb Oakes< no role > was Ordered to be made free of this City having
Servd his apprenticeship in this Hospital to Jeffrey Gillingham< no role > late Artmaster by Indre dated
ye. 19th. day of March 1715.

Beadles Grat ½ Yr. to
Xmas 1729}


Upon reading the humble Petition of the four Beadles and Portersman of this Hospital
for their usual Gratuitys of forty Shillings a peice in respect of the half year ending at
Christmas last for that their Salarys are but small It is Ordered that the Clerk of these
Hospitals do give and Pay unto them forty Shillings a peice to be allowd him in his next account.

Basketmen Gret ½ Yr. to
Xmas 1729}


Upon reading the humble Petition of the three Beadles or Basketmen of the Hospital
of Bethlem for their usual Gratuitys of twenty Shillings a Peice in respect of the half Year
ending at Christmas last for that their Salarys are but small It is Ordered that the
Clerk of these Hospitals do give and pay into them Twenty Shillings a peice to be allowd
him in his next account.

Upon reading the humble Petition of James Waldo< no role > Hempdresser settingforthThat he
hath been an Artsmaster of this Hospital near 30 Years during which time there has constantly been
another Hempdresser in the Hospital besides him and they have employd the Prisoners that have
been sent to this Hospital from time to time equally between them Vizt. One half by yor. Petr.
ye. other half by the other Hempdresser and they used to pay 4d. P day for a Man & 2d. for a
Boy until the 29th. day of March 1723 when ye Governors were pleased to make in Order for
the Hempdressers to pay 6d P day for a Man and 3d. for a BoyThat since ye.death of
Wm. Stead< no role > Hempdresser late one of ye. Artsmasters which was in May 1728 ye Petr. hath
employd all ye. Prisoners whereby he has been a great Sufferer and has been obliged to find Hemp
for them to work on when he had Hemp enough by him ready beatThat he hath lost by the
Prisoners Labour from ye. 23d. of June 1729 to ye. 14th. of this Instant March upwards of
sixteen pounds and he finds that he cannot employ all the Prisoners that are sent hither
at the prices he now pays for the same wherefore and for that he has all along kept a
Sufficient number of apprenticesThe prayd that the Governors would allow him the money
he has been out of pocket since the said Steads death and to order that he may for the future
only pay four pence P day for a Man and two peace for a Boy as formerly It is Ordered
that it be referrd to the Comittee of this House to consider of the said Petition and to report their
opinion therein to this Court.

Corrected before ye rest of the
Apprentices


Upon the Complaint of Nathaniel Whitmore< no role > one of the Artsmasters that his
Apprentice Bartholomew Todd< no role > is idle and Neglects his Work and that he ran away last
Wednesday Night and did not return home till about 11 o'Clock last Night the said Apprentice
being Sent for and Examined It was Orderd that he be Corrected and accordingly he was Corrected
in the Presence of the rest of the ApprenticesAnd the Court being afterwards Acquainted that the
said Bartholomew Todd< no role > upon his return to his Masters house Declar'd he would not Work He was
Sent for and Corrected agen.

Gillett Wm< no role > . late appr to Swinburn
reprimanded for taking all out of ye
Stewards that


The Steward Acquainting the Court that Wm. Gillett< no role > Apprentice to Swinburn who lately left the Hospitals
having been for sometime at the Stewards house till another Master could be gott for him had taken some Ale
out of his Cellar he was Reprimanded by Mr President and Order'd to Return to the Stewards.

Order'd that every Apprentice in this Hospital who lyes out of his Masters house without
the Lease of his Master shall be Corrected and that a Copy of this Order be Sent to every Artsmaster.
