taken this 29th Decr. 1797 in the
Parish of St. Mart. Westmr . at the
House of Edward Spice< no role > the Sign of
the Feathers in Dean Street near Deans
Yard Westmr before Anthy Gell< no role >
His Majesty's Coroner In sd City &
Liberty touching the Death of
Stephenson then and there
lying dead as follow to Wit

Richard Byas< no role > a Private of 6th. Regimnt of Foot Guards
being sworn deposeth That the works at Mr. Midleys
Coal Wharf in Cannon Row Westmr. and that abot.
half past seven this Morning as he was going across
the Crofts there he saw the deceased floating up
against one of the Barges whereupon he called
to [..] some of his fellow Servants who came &
assisted him in taking the deceased out the Water
and they put him into one of the Barges when he
appeared quite dead and he had nothing on but his
Shirt and his Hair was tied with a black
Ribband whereupon this Deponent went to the
Parish officers who sent & Shell and conveyed him
from thence to St. Margarets Workhouse and
further this Deponent sayeth not
