Richard Dignan< no role > belonging to the Rotation Office in
Litchfield Street on his Oath saith That on Monday last
the 24th day of March last in the Evening, he went
to a Publick House the Sign of the Cook in Grafton
Street , and saw many people going out of the
House, and was told that a Man was used ill,
and was beat upon which he went out and saw
the Deced lying down near the Street Door, Says
that one of the Deced's Eyes was Clark and swelled
and that Deced said to Dept. that he would fight
the other Man (whose name is Mortimer) if he [..]
be his Second, which Dept. agreed to, and the Deced
& Mortimer stripped and Fought about ten Minutes
in the Street, Says that they had each of them falls,
and the last time that Mortimer fall he reced
a Wound upon the back part of his Head, upon
which Mortimer said that he would fight no more
and no more Blows passed there, and this Dept.
says that he believes that Deced reced no hurt in the
Street-Says that he saw the Deced again the
next day about Eleven o'Clock at the Sign of the Court
when the Deced appeared to be in Liquor, and
said that he would fight Mortimer again for
ten Guineas as soon as his Eye was well, if
Dept. would be his Second

Adam Bennett< no role > Waiter at the Sign of the Cook in
Grafton Street on his Oath saith that on this day
fortnight, as Dept. thinks, Joseph Pauley< no role > the Deced
Mr. Mortimer and some others Men came together to the
Cock between Six and Seven o'Clock in the Evening all appearing to be
in Liquor, but the others not to much as the Deced,
Says that he went into the Caller and when he
came up in about two Minutes he saw the Deced

and Mortimer fighting in the Taproom across one
of the Boxes, and some of the Men holding up the
Box rather to the Disadvantage of the Deced, Says
that the Deced had the worst of it and gave out,
both his Eye being black and some Blood running
down his face says that soon after Deced said that
he would fight Mortimer in the Street and they
accordingly did go out and foright for some time
stripped says that the Deced was at the Sign of
the Cock the next day, and drank a good deal of Liquor
in Company and Died there. but did not complain
at all having reced any Injury by the Fight there

John Whitmore< no role > Periwig maker of Grafton Street on his
Oath saith that Joseph Pauley< no role > the Deced Lodged with
Dept. and came home on Monday March 15th. as [..]
Dept. thinks, about ten o'Clock at Night, very much
in Liquor, having two black Eyes, and saying that
he had been fighting, Says that he Breakfasted the
next Morning with Dept. and afterwards went out
to the Cock a Publick House in the same Street, [..]
he Dined and Drank freely, and came home above
that Night about ten o'Clock very much in Liquor
that he was out on Wednesday and Thursday
but did not complain of being hurt by fighting
Says that he complained on Thursday Evening that
he was not well, afterwards grew worse and feverish
and was sometimes light Headed, Says that he ende [..]
to get a Letter for Deced to go [..] the Midsex Hospital
but being Disappointed, he applied to the Overseer of
the Parish, and the Deced was carried to the
Poor House, where he died as Dept. is informed
