1770 at the Parish of St. James within the Liberty of Westmr

and found the Deced's Bedchamber Door fastened on the inside Says that
after calling the Deced several times and having no Answer he forced
open the Door, and on Entering the Room and opening the Shutter

Deced was dead, but Dept. did not see any Wound; And this Dept.
says that he saw the Deced of late almost every day, and from
this Depts. observation upon the Deced's Behaviour, does believe
that the Deced for a fortnight last past has at times been Insane
and for that reason this Dept. or his Brother George Charles
endeavoured to be with the Deced, as often as they could.

Al. Charles< no role >

John Clapham< no role > Footman to the Deced on his Oath saith That the Deced
went to Bed last Night about Eleven o'Clock Says that the Deced
used to open the Shutter of his Bedchamber Window (being the pair of stairs) in the Morning
and generally came down Stairs about nine o'Clock, That the Shutter
not being opened this Morning, and Dept. not hearing his Master Moor
and after touching at the Door & finding the Bedchamber Door fastened on the inside (which was not
usual) he was frightened and feared that some Accident had
happened to him, upon which he went to Mr. Alexander Charles< no role > the
Deced's Brother and told him what he had done, Says that Mr. Charles
came to Deced's House immediately and went up Stairs into the Deced's
Bedchamber Door which he forced open (Dept. being then upon the
Stairs) Says, that Mr. Charles went into the Room and soon came
down, after which Dept. went into the Room and saw only the Deced's
foot upon the Floor, Dept. being then much frightened, but afterwards
went in and saw the Deced upon the Floor dead and a great deal
of Blood upon the Floor. And this Dept. says that the Deced has been out
of Order for about a Month and particularly for the last fortnight
during which time his Behaviour was different from what is used to be
That he Eat very little and appeared useasy in his Mind, and behaviour
that the Deced was disordered in his Senses.
