Says that Samuel Whitten< no role > the Deced was Dept Servant
and last Monday was cleaning the Room where the
Wild Beafts were kept about seven o'Clock in the
Morning Says that he was in Bed and or hearing
Deced crying out he got up and found that their Dept.
Black Bear had hold of the Deceds Right Leg.and that
the Deceds Leg was very much tore Says that he took
hold of the Bear's Collar and Struck the Bear upon the
Nose Several times upon which he let the Deced loose, says that
the Bear was chained to the Floor by an Iron Chain
about Six inches long, says that the Deced was carried
to the Westmr. Hospital and that the Bear was killed
the same day in this Dept. presence, Says that the Bear
was very quiet and Dept. never knew him attempt to Bite
any body before and that the said Bear was of the
Value of five Shillings.
