"hundred and Eighty seven Eleven Pounds four shillings and for One
"Rate for the year One Thousand Seven hundred and Eighty eight
"Six Pounds thirteen Shillings and four pence That on the fifth
day of February then last past the said Collectors of the Poors Rate
for the said Hamlet made a Claim on the Petitioners for Two
years from Lady day One Thousand Seven hundred and Eighty
seven to Lady day One Thousand Seven hundred and eighty nine
including their said former demand, whereby the Petitioners
Conceived themselves aggrieved which said Appeal stood duly adjourned
until this day Now upon hearing the said appeal and what
hath been alledged by the respective Parties their Counsel and
Witnesses It appears that the said Hamlet of Hampton
wick is a vill Maintaining its own poor , That the Appellants
by virtue and in pursuance of the Statute of the Seventeenth of the
present Reign Chap: 18. and out of the Fund provided by that Act
purchased from Sir William Dollen< no role > for the Sum of £4200 an
ancient Bargeway or Towing Path within the said Hamlet
upon the Bank of the River Thames and certain ancient Tolls
and duties payable in respect of Horses drawing Barges along
the same and that such Bargeway and Tolls were in the Month
of January 1778 duly conveyed to the appellants for the purpose of
the said Act. That the Appellants have Leased the Herbage
and Pasture of the said Bargeway or Towing Path to Mr Spencers
at an Annual Rent of £30,, 10. which is expressly appropriated
to the use of the Navigation and that their Lessee is in the
Occupation of the Herbage and Pasture so leased to him and pays
the several Rates for the same. That immediately on the said
Purchase and Conveyance the Tolls upon Barge Horses werein
pursuance of the direction of the said Act discontinued and
ever since that time the new Tolls authorized by the said Statute
to be collected in lieu and stead thereof have been taken by the
Appellants for all Barges and other Vessels navigating the said
River between London Bridge and the City Stone above Staines
Bridge according to the quantity of Tomage. That Barges and
then Vessels are daily navigated on that part of the Rivers
Thames which is within the said Hamlet and adjoins the
