Clerkenwell Session house
October Sessions 1784
Brief for Respondents
M. Wright Sollg.

Saint Paul Shadwell
agt.
Saint George Middlesex

The Appeal is from Mary Robson< no role > the Pauper & States that her Husband had been gone to Sea about four
Months and that she expects him in about Two Months

That Petitioner had Lodged in the parish of St. George Middx for upwards of two Years in good Credit but
being deceived in not having received Monthly Money left by her Husband & being very Big with Child & near her
time of lying in was unable to support herself & Child on which Petr. applied to the Officers of the parish of Saint
George for Relief

That Petr. was Examined as to her Settlement & Signed the Examination annexed to the sd. Vagrant Pass but
was not Informed that the Preamble to the sd. Pass contained a Reference wherein your Petr. & her Child aged
upwards of One Year was described as Vagabonds & had been Apprehended as such

That Petr. was Conducted to the House of the Revd. Dr. Mayo One of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the
sd. County of Middx where Petr. had been since Informed that she then Child was Charged before the sd. Justices
with being Vagabonds (Vizt.) Wandering Abroad & laying in the Open Air in the sd. parish of Saint George

That the sd. Revd. Dr. Mayo did not Acquaint Petr. with the Charge made agt. her

That Petr. and her Child was by the sd. Vagrant Pass forthwith Conveyed by One of the Officers from the said
parish of St. George to the sd. parish of St. Paul Shadwell & there delivered to One of the Overseers of the Poor

That Petr. never Wandered Abroad & laid in the Open Air as stated in the sd. Pass or Committed any Act
of Vagrancy wsoever. either in the sd. parish of St. George or elsewhere but on the Contrary hath Constantly demeaned
herself in a decent & Reputable Manner & never was in a Situation to be deem'd under the Odious
description of a Vagabond

That Petr. conceived herself aggrieved by the Act of the sd. Justice in having Sign'd the before mentioned
Pass declaring that Petr. & her Child had been Apprehended as Vagabonds & by Petr. & her Child having been
Conveyed as such out of the sd. Parish of St. George to the sd. parish of St. Paul Shadwell

The Pauper before she was Removed Applied several times to the parish Officers for
Relief at Shadwell but they refused to receive her without a Pass & she having been Turned
out of her Lodging was Removed by a Vagrant Order

Mr Wright not being at Home at the time of her Removal & the Beadles
who usually Removes Pauper being Sick was the reason of her Going in that Modes
& Mr Wright on knowing the Circumstance Informed the Vestry Clerk of Shadwell
he would receive back the Pauper, and said her with a Legal Order, but he said they
Overseers of Shadwell Insisted an Appealing against same

The Ground of Removal of the Pauper; is that she was Born in
Shadwell parish , never Lived a Yearly Servant in any place, nor did she know
his Husbands Settlement

Mr Wright Trusts that having offered to receive back the Pauper & said her
by a Legal Order, that the Order will be Quashed without Cortsof
