To the Worshipful Justices of the Peace for the
County of Middlesex
Gentlemen
It not remaining probable that I
should be chosen to succeed to the Surveyorship of
Clerkenwell district
, was I to abide the Election, as
an apparent Majority of the Votes stand engaged to
One Candidate, Under such circumstances I should
be much wanting in respect to those Gentlemen who
were pleased to promise the their support, by rendering
their Suffrage useless, and particularly culpable in
giving unnecessary trouble and [..] I not decline any
further contention on the present vacancy. At the same
time beg leave to return my most grateful acknowledgements
to those Gentlemen who on this occasion wished to serve me
and Flatter myself that on a future Vacancy I shall be
encouraged with a more general support I have the
Honor to be Gentlemen
with the greatest respect
Your devoted hble Servant
