Observ: 1st
These charges include the expence of apprehending Vagrants over
the whole County of Middlesex
that is as well within Liberties as
without The City of Westminster
, tho' it is a Liberty within the
County, and has a Commission of the Peace distinct from that
for the County, yet it is considered as part of the County of
Middlesex
. There is but one Rate raised by the Justices of the
Peace
for the Middlesex
and Westminster
, and that Rate is answerable
to the demands made on it under both Commissions for the rewards
adjudged to those who apprehend Vagrants.
Observ 2d.
The Expence of passing Vagrants in the thro & out of the County of
Middlesex
was formerly a very heavy charge on their Treasury;
but by the care and attention of the Justices to the Interest of
the County, it is now brought within the Limits of moderation.
No later than the Year 1757 the amount of this Article of
Expence alone was not less than a £1000 per annum; it is now
