Then to shew that the Middlesex prisoners
Committed and Surrendered to the said Gaol
are not greater now than heretofore.

Mr. JamesJefferson< no role > produced on Account
which has extracted from the Gaol delivery Books.
and which he said was a true Extractwhereby it
appeared that from Decr: 1656 to October 1671
inclusive there were 6666 exclusive of such as
were discharged by Proclamation and from 1741 to
1755 both Ind: there were 7842 including those
discharged by Proclamation
to annex this Accot.

To Shew that the County have several

Prisons of their own. to which persons for all
but For most Atronious offences are Comitted & that the
soled

Mr: Pentlow said that there is New Prison

Clerkenwell Clerkenwell Bridewell Tothill
Fields Bridewell and the Gate house in Westmr.
to which persons charged with Crimes are Committed
That he does not know whether Tothill [..]
Fields Bridewell belongs to Westminster .

That the City paid towards the Rebuilding of the sd. Gaol after the Great Fire of London in 1666 near 11000to 863.16and by anor. Accot.
and ConstantlyRepaired that it saith been attend Enlarged by the City it ever since the Year 1699 to the present time
At a very considerable Expence atappear by an Account delivered in Intitled an Account
ofthat [..] have included for an upon accot. of repairing & alterning the Gaol Etc.

or to the County at largeThat he has a
Salary of £30 and the Keeper of Clerkenwell
Bridewell has £50 a Year paid him by the
Treasurer of the Countyout of the County Money
That all Expences for repairs and other Expences incident
to the said prisons of Clerkenwell and New prison are
defrayed by the County-And the Witness produced
An Account of the Number of prisoners Committed tothe
said
New Prison together with those removed to Newgate from
January Sessions 1755 inclusive to January Session 1765
exclusive whereby it appeared that the Number of Prisoners
Committed were 7053 and the Number there of removed to
New gate were 1800.

That the said Prison is very old but the prisoners
are as healthy as any private Family which he
attributes to the Cleanliness and Airmess of the prison
and that only 10 Prisoners one whereof Murther'd
himself have died in 10 Ps: & none of them of any Contagious
