To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of
Saint James Clerkenwell in thesaid County of Middlesex and also
to all Constables and Headboroughs within the same Parish especially
to John Thorpe< no role >

Whereas in and by a Rate and Assessment made Assessed Allowed and
Published according to the Statutes in that Case made and Provided The
several Persons whose names are Set forth in the Schedule hereunto annext
Inhabitants and Occupiers of Houses Lands & other rate [..] Tenemts in the said Parish of Saint James
Clerkenwell (to wit) that part or district of the said Parish called the upper sidewaswere duly rated and Assessed for and towards the necessary
relief of the Poor of the said Parish for this Present year the severaland
respective
Sums set against theirseveral andrespective namesin the [..]
Schedule hereunto annexed
payable atat abLady Day last past And Whereas it duly Appeared unto us two of
his Majestys Justices of the Peace in and for the said County one whereof
being of the Quorumas well upon the Oath ofone of the
Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish as otherwise
that the said several
Sums haveset against their several and respective names hathbeen lawfully
Demanded of the said several Personswhoand that theyand that the said several Persons
have respectively refused anddateyet do refuse to pay the same; And Whereas some of the said several
Persons having appeared before us in pursuance of our Summons for that
purpose havehathnot shewned to usann sufficient cause why the same should
not be paid and others of them at the duly sumd. have prade default & [..] These are therefore to require you forthwith to make
Distress of the goods and Chattels of them the said several Persons in the
Schedule hereunto Annex't. And if within the space of four days next after
such distress & distresses by you taken thesaidSums so in arrearset against each respective Persons
name in the Schedule hereunto annext together
with reasonable charges
of taking and keepingthisof such distress or distresses respectively shall not be paid that then you do Sell
the saidsuch Goods and chattles. so by you distrained for the best prices that can be letter and our of the Moneys
arising by such Salethatyou detain the said respective Sumsso set against such
respective Persons name
and also your reasonable charges of taking
keeping and Selling the saiddistress:Goods rendering to thesaid PersonOwners respectivly the
Over plus on Demand and if no such distress can be made that then you
Certify the same unto us, to the end that such further proceedings may be
had therein, as to law doth appertain Given under our hands and Seals
this 26th./28.day of June 1764
