the Death of Richard Mathews< no role > at the Sign of the Pewter Platter in Cross Street
Hatton Garden in the Parish of St. Andrew Holborn the 16th. Day of August 1760 before
Me George Grew< no role > on an Inquisition then & there taken on View of the Body of
Richard Mathews< no role > This name instance is in set 190. as follow.

John Warford< no role > of Hatton Garden Danceing Master being Sworn, On his Oath
Says that on the 15th. Day of August He this Deponent was at the Pewter Platter in Cross Street Hatton Garden
a little after 9 in the Evening to pass some Time with a few Friends, The deceased Mr.
Mathews came into the same House & Room about 40 Minutes after this Depont. in
Company with One Mr Chapman, & about a Quarter of an Hour afterward Mr. Steirn
also came into the same Room where this Depont. & Persons before mentioned were sitting;
This Depont. thought that Mr. Steirn looked or appeared confused or flattered, he took no certain
Seat or place for above ten minutes but passed from Chair to Chair Standing behind, first
Mr. Crawfords. then this Deponts then the deceased Mr. Mathew's his Chair; And after some
Silence Mr. Steirn asked Mr. Mathews why did not you meet Mer. Mathews replyed I had not
Opportunity said that He had been with Mr. Chapman; and further said, I am here Now; Mr.
Crawford then rose from his Chair & said for God's Sake Mr. Steirn be Quiet Steirn replyed
that his Honour had been greatly injured, That He had been treated like a Theif & Adultorer,
Mathews replyed, Mr. Steirn you had better be Quiet you will only expose Yourself and added
Mr. Steirn said that He, Mathews, was jealous of him, Steirn, with Mathew's Wife, and that
he, Steirn, said he would give him reason to be jealous, which he, Steirn, did by running after her
up & down Stairs: After many disagreable Expressions on both sides Steirn made a turn to the
vacant part of the Room towards the Window about 2 yards from, & opposite to Mr. Mathews &
then this Depont. was surprized with the flash & Reports of 2 peices of fire arms & believes they
were Pistolls after wch Steirn attempting to make his Escape this Depont. caught hold of his Collar &
there him on the Ground & afterwards delivered him to more powerfull Custody: and then next view
this Depont. had of Mr. Mathews was lying on the Ground blooding & expiring & white this Depont. was
astride of Mr. Steirn on the Ground Steirn said he was not Sorry that He mean in Mathews was dead
but that he Steirn had not killed himself Depont. further says. that white he staid in the same Room two
pistolls were taken upon the same Room & Deponent beleives they were the same that are now shown,
& believes Steirn fired these two pistolls

Thomas Vann< no role > Servant at the Pewter Platter aforesaid on his Oath says, The same 15th
Day of August That he was at the Door of the Room where Mr. Steirn was & heard two Reports of fire
Arms & saw Mr. Steirn return his Arm after the Report & saw something in his hand & immediately
after such Reports Steirn Attempted to run away: Dept. further says that some time before such
Reports Mr. Mathews was alive, & very well & had received a Tankard of Beer from this Deponent
