Order upon the Petn.
of Inhabitants of
Shad well.

A Petition of several Persons whose Names are thereunto
subscribed Inhabitants of the Parish of Saint Paul Shadwell
and other places adjacent in this County being presented to this
Court Setting forth that on Saturday the 20th., and Wednesday
the 24th. days of February last great numbers of Coal heavers
and other persons assembled in a riotous and tumultuous
manner in the said Parish of Saint Paul Shadwell and beat
maimed, and wounded several Persons who were following
their lawful Occupations, and broke the Windows Frames
and Shutters of many of the Inhabitants, and afterwards
boarded several Ships in the River, and wounded and cruelly
treated the Masters, Mates and Seamen on board, on Monday
the 6th. of March following they went to the Salutation Tavern
at Wapping Wall occupied by the Petitioner Thomas Metcalf< no role >
and about 7 o'clock in the Evening entred the House pulled
down the Chimney piece, broke the Windows, china Bowls,
Decanters and almost every thing else in the Bar the said
petitioner having feed from his House, for fear of being
Murthered, they then with Oaths and imprecations demanded
of the Petitioners Wife the Body of the Petitioner, whose life
they swore they were determined to have, That the said Petr.
had a Wife and six Children who depended entirely on the
said petitioner for their support and maintenance which they
were deprived of by the petitioners being obliged to absent himself
