By Adjournment on Friday the 12th. day of
July 1760 .

Middlesex

The Presentment of the Grand Inquest
of the County of Middlesex sworn and charged to Inquire
for the Lord the King for the Body of the said County at the
General Quarter Session of the Peace holden for the County
aforesaid at Hicks Hall in Saint John Street in the same
County on Monday the Seventh Day of July 1760 in the
thirty forth year of the Reign of King George the Second
over Great Britain Etc Vizt.

We having on or taken a View of the State and Condition of the
two Goals or Prisons called the New Prison , and the House of Correction
at Clerkenwell in this County Do find and present that the said Goals
or prisons respectively are out of Repair in sundry Respects and
that several Reparations are necessary to be forthwith made therein
for the support of the Building and Security of the Prisoners And
we further present that the under mentioned Buildings and
Alterations are highly necessary and proper to be made in the
said Prisons for the safe and well Keeping of the Men Prisoners
therein and will be a great Improvement thereto, and a great Honour
as well as use and benefit to this County as follows

Seperations Necessary
in the House of Correction}

To take down the Brickwall which now seperates the
Keeper's Garden from the Yard where the Prisoners are
promiscuosly kept together and remove the same about Four
Feet into the said Yard so that the men and Women prisoners
may be kept seperate from each other

Also that the Work Room in the said Prison may be
kept seperated by a Wall or Partition And that the Gallery
over the said Workroom be divided so that the Men and
Women prisoners may be intirely kept assunder.

That the Garden now Occupied by the Keeper of
New prison be divided by a Wall cross the same And one
part thereof appropriated to the use of the Keeper of the House
of Correction And also that there be a Room and other
necessary Conveniences made for the Women in
the said Prison.
