near Westsmithfield London, of the Foundation of King Henry the 8th.
For Lands, on which stood Tenements & Houses by them pulled down
& demolished the TenantsTenementswhereof were used to be charged in the
Poors Rate 8s/4d Weekly. £1.13.4 Monthly £5 quarterly: That the
Parish have continued such Rate upon such Wards for the poors
ever since to the detriment & loss of the Charity.

That about the YearAn Elaboratory also
hath been Erected for the Service of the Hospital only upon Ground
within the Liberty & Precinct thereof which the sd, Churchwardens
Overseers & Inhabitants have Assessed after the Rate of £2.18 a Year
as followeth that is to say the Mayor Commonalty & Citizens of the
City of London Governors of the House of the poor commonly called St
Bartholomews Hospital near Westsmithfield London, of the
Foundation of King Henry the 8th. for their Elaboratory where sevl.
Houses stood which were used to be charged in the poors Rate Weekly1s [..]
Monthly 4s.. Quarterly 12s. which Rate hath been continued & now
continues to be rated to the detriment & loss of the Charity.

That all the sd. 4 Pyles of Buildings being finished in 1766,
the Governors pulled down 19 Old Houses & Shops (part of the sd. Antient
Buildings) to make an Area to the Hospital for the benefit of the
patients which is a void anoccupied space of Grand & about 66
Yards by 60 for which the sd. Parish Officers have Assessed & rated the
sd. Governors after the rate of £41.5 a year-as followeth that is to
say "The Mayor Commonally & Citizens of the City of London Governors
"of the House of the Poor commonly called St. Bartholomews Hospital near
"Westsmithfield London of the Foundation of King Henry the 8th. for Land
"on which stood Tenements & Houses (within the Quadrangle of the sd
"Hospital beside such as were before by them pulled down & demolished)
"by them pulled down & demolished the Tenants whereof were used to be
"charged in the Poors Rate 17s & 2d [..] .2 Weekly £3.8.9 Monthly £10.6.3
"quarterly". and which sd. Sums of £20. £22.8 & £41.5 making in all
£63.13 a year (over & above what is charged upon their respective
Officers residing in the Hospital) was for the Year 1767 & now continues
to be Assessed & rated on the sd. Governors in respect of the Premes.

That your Petitioners are Adviced & humbly Insist that
Your Petitioners servts. or Poor Patients Inhabitants or occupiers
of the sd. premes are not liable nor ought to be charged any thing to
the Poors Rate.. in respect of the sd. Hospital Elaboratory or void space
of Ground.

Therefore your petitioners humbly Appeal from
such rate & Assessment, in regard to the sd. above
