The Parish of St. Sepulchre Without
4th. day of February 1774 touching the Death of
a new Born Male Child then and there lying
Dead

Paul Cauldwell< no role > Soap Boiler of the Parish of
St. Sepulchre Middx that Jane Comforth< no role > on the sixth
of Jany. last hired herself into the Witness serving as Cook Maid
on Feby. the 2d between five & Sixabout a 4 after fivein the Evan &
John Williams< no role > his man Servant came to the
Witness & informed him there was something in the
Vault that should not be, upon which He asked
John what he thought it could be, who answered
Jenny knew best, that be immediately went
into the Kitchen & ask'd Jenny what she had been
doing of, but she gave no answer, that John
returned & said that there was a Child in the Vault
but he could not Reach it, upwith the Tongs,
upon which Mr. Cauldwell ordered the Necessary
to be open'd, which was accordingly done, & the Child
taken out by one of the Servants belonging to the
Witness, the Man return'd & said the Child was
taken out alive and by his order put into Jennys apron
While the Child was cleand and brought up into the Kitcher where Jenny then was who
held the Candle, & did
not Shew the least
Immotion
and the Witness call'd in two of his Neighbours
Wifes who washed the Childs & sent for a Surgeon who came
and examined the Child and the Witness then
charg'd Jenny with a Constable & to take the Mother
& Child down to the Workhouse which was accordingly
done thatupon this WShe made no particular
Confesson to him but only that she was undone
and was sory for what she had donethat about between
Ten & Eleven in the Morning Jenny first Complained
she had the Cholick
