Informations of Witnesses taken at the dwelling house of
Ann Brown< no role > Widow the Sign of The Kings Arms in
Chappel Street
in the Parish of St. Andrew Holborn above Bars in the County of Middlesex on
Tuesday the thirtiethday of May1786 Before
Edward Umfreville< no role > Esquire one of his Majestys Coroners for the said
County touching the death of Alexander Martin< no role >
then and there lying dead as follow

Esquire Upon his Oath Saith That he has known the
deceased about Two Years and always of a Cheerfull
disposition untill about Friday last when (being in
habits of intimacy with & frequently seeing him and being
in the Company observed he was remarkably dull,
which he attributed to his Affairs being much
embarrassed & also having lost his Sight some three
or four Years since and tho: he recovered his Sight
in some small degree after an Operation he underwent
for the purpose yet it did not wholly succeed. and he
was obliged to Value Hemlock Pills for the purpose
of assisting the Operation so as to make it have the
desired Effect & which pills always made him
Giddy being advised to take them till they did
so Saw him on Saturday and Sunday and on
both days he seemed more low and Melancholly
than before.And on Monday Morning heard that
the deceased had destroyed himselfSaith that
the deceased was Indebted to a Friend in every considerable
Sum of Money and in order that he should to properly [..]
had insured his own Life and about 10 days before the Accident
had reinsured his Life having borrowed an add Sum & the [..]
know that an Act of Suicide would destroy the insurance [..]
Saith he was Captn. of Invalids
