Southwark Deposition of Witnesses taken at the Parish
of Saint Olave within the Borough of Southwark
in the County of Surrey this 1st. day of March
1799 on view of the body of Edward Virgan< no role >
now here lying Dead.

William Berrymen< no role > of No. 50 Maze Southwark Lighterman
maketh Oath that the deced has been with him between
four and five Months that he was on trial with Deponent
in and to be bound to him as an Apprentice that the deced
was put with Dept by his [..] the who lives in Stillwell
Court in the Maze aforesaid Dept keeps a Coal shed and
about ¼ part three [..] on Wednesday afternoon to a Dept
helped the deced to put a Bushel of Coal on his back to take
to a Customer of Depts. Taht about ¼ part five same after
the deced being missing Dept. looked after him and on going
into an Empty Left up two pair of Stairs behind Dept
house he found the deced hanging his Dept fastened by a
piece of Rope under his Chin and suspended from a Ladder
in the coroner of the Left Dept cut him down that he was
warm but appeared nearby or quite Dead that a
Surgeon was called in who used means to recover the deced
but without effect Dept. understood the deced was little
more than fourteen Years of Age
