Southwark

Deposition of a Witness taken at the Parish of
Saint Olave within the Borough of Southwark in
the County of Surrey this 11th: day of July 1797
on view of the body of Thomas Hoare< no role > now here
lying Dead.

Thomas Barton< no role > Watchman at the Brew house belonging
to Messrs. flews Newbury & Maddocks situated in the stoney Lane
in the parish of Saint Olave Southwark maketh Oath that he
hath known the deced Thomas Hoare< no role > about three Years that he
hath been Horse Keeper at the same Brew house the whole of that
timethat between three and four on Sunday Morning last the
deced came and sat down in the Watchouse of the Brew house along
with Dept.that the deced appeared to be soberthat the deced
continued in the Watch house about ten Minutesthat the deced
asked Dept. were he (the deced) could get any Beer Dept. told him
no he did not know where he could get anythe deced then left
Dept.and weresaying he was going to the Stable Dept. saw him
go towards the StableThat in about half an hour after Dept. went
into the Stable and missed the deced in order to wash his face and handsDept. went into the Stable
Loft over the Stable to look after the deced Dept. knowing there was
a Door in the Stablle Loft that led out to the top of the building
which and from whence any one might go along the Leads at the
toptheof the building and get at a Door by going through which
any person might get at the Vats wherein the Beer is kept that
before Dept. got to the Door that communicate with the Vats
he heard some one Groan Dept. went in at the Door and leaned
over to hearoutfrom whence the Groan came Dept. then went
down some Stairs and found the deced on the Ground near the
bottom of one of the Vats his head and feet on the Groundwereagainst
a post nearly double Dept. lifted him [..] up that he could not
speak that he Groaned very muchthat he had a large cut on
Wound over his left EyeDept. got assistance and took the deced
into the Stable where he continued, untilbetween seven and eighta little beforeeightfive o Clock
when he departed this LifeThat in betweeneightseven and eight o Clock
