Deposition of a Witness taken at London that is to
say at the Parish of Christ church in the Ward of
Farringdon within in London aforesaid this
5th. day of July 1797 on view of the body of William
Ploughman now here lying Dead

James Lyon< no role > a Prisoner in Newgate maketh Oath that about three
Weeks ago he saw the deced in a corner of the Court Yard of the Gaol
that the deced appeared to be ill and could scarcely walkDept.
asked the deced in what situation he was that he appeared agitated
the deced say'd he was very much distressed and ill for want of food
that he had had nothing but the bread part of his allowance for a [..]
Week or near a Week that he had been compelled to eat the Potatoe
Skins that were thrown on the Floor by the other Prisoners and had
picked up the decayed and withered Vegetables to eat them That he had
been denied the All Not which Dept understood to be a mixture of
Meat and Broth allowed by the Sheriffs twice a WeekDept. then
took the deced up to Dept. Ward and gave him three pence to get a
Loaf of Bread with. the deced then left Dept. Ward that he could
scarce walk downDept. saw the deced the next day that he was then
very ill could scarce speak Dept. asked the deced how he was he sayed
he was very ill that he was reduced to his then situation by want
That Dept. saw the deced several times after that he appeared much worse
had no Bed or covering whatever but lay upon the damp Boards
That three four or five persons were in the same Ward with the deced
