Southwark

Informations of Witnesses taken at th parish of
Saint John within the Borough of Southwark in the County
of Surrey on the 31st. day of May 1797 on view of the body of
John Hook< no role > now here lying dead.

John Hiscock< no role > of Vine Yard Tooley Street Carpenter
on his Oath saith that on Monday Evening he was at
Work with John Hook< no role > the Father of the deceased two boys
came running to the deceaseds Father and said something
which Deponent did not thenbuthear and upon observing
the Father of the deceased to run he enquired what was the matter
and was informed that Hooks Son was Drowned Deponent there went down
to Pickle Herring Stairs to render assistance and Deponent
procured a pair of Grappling Irons and dragged the River
the Father also Grappled for him and Deponent saw him
drag the deceased out of the water and he was then
conveyed to the Five pipes public house near the Stairs where
the means were used to restore him to life as prescribed by
the Humane Society but in vain the deceased being quite dead
