Southwark

An Inquisition Indented taken for our Sovereign Lord the King at the parish of Saint Olave
Southwark within the Borough of Southwark in the County of Surrey on the second day of July in
the thirty sixth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the grace of God of Great
Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the faith and so forth before Thomas Shelton< no role > Gentleman
Coroner of our said Lord the King for the City of London and Borough of Southwark on view of the
body of Maria Stevens< no role > now here lying dead by the oath of George Squire< no role > John Powell< no role > William
West John Davidson< no role > Charles Kincroft< no role > George Watson< no role > William Hudggings< no role > John Austin< no role > Edward Brannan< no role >
Joseph Jones< no role > Samuel Walkins< no role > Edward Hooper< no role > Milles Green< no role > and John Shields< no role > good and lawful
men of the Borough of Southwark . [..] aforesaid who being now here duly chosen sworn and charged
to inquire for our said Lord the King when how and in what manner the said Maria Stevens< no role >
came to her death say upon their oath that the said Maria Stevens< no role > not being of sound mind memory
and understanding but lunatic and distracted on the first day of July in the year aforesaid one
end of a certain Cord of no value fastened through a certain hole in a certain room in the dwelling
house of John Vanderwell< no role > there situate and the other end of the said piece of Cord [..] round and
about her own neck did then and there fix tye and fasten by means whereof the said Maria
Stevens did then and there hang strangle and suffocate herself of which said hanging strangling
and suffocation she the said Maria Stevens< no role > did then and there die And so the Jurors aforesaid
upon their oath aforesaid do say that the said Maria Stevens< no role > not being of sound mind
memory and understanding but lunatic and distracted did hang and kill herself
It Witness whereof as well the said Coroner as the said George Squire< no role > the foreman
of the said Jurors on behalf of himself and the rest of his fellows in their presence have
to this Inquisition set their hands and seals the day year and place first above
