Southwark

Depositions of Witnesses taken at the Parish of
Saint Olave within the Borough of Southwark
in the County of Surrey this 2d. day of July 1796
on view of the Body of Maria Stevens< no role > now
here lying Dead.

Christopher Marbun< no role > a Hat Dyer & a Lodger at No. 3
Meeting house Walk Snows Fields Southwark maketh Oath
that between the hours of Six & seven last Night Dept. being
at Work in this Maters Shop (Mr. Turneys) little Maze Court
Southwark a Woman who keeps a House near the back
Door of Dept. Parters premises came & requested Dept.
to get up to the one pair of Stairs window of her house
saying the belived or thought her Lodger (meaning the deced)
had done something to herself Dept. got a Stool & got on it
& from thence on the pent house over the Door & from thence
he looked in at the Window which was open & saw the deced hanging by
a Cord against the wainscoat in the Room Depts got down
& gave the alarm in a little while after Dept. & one of his
Shopmater (James Wisham< no role > ) went to the one pair of Stairs Room Door wherein the deced was that the Door
was fastened inside James Wisham forced the Door open
& went into the Room where the deced was [..]
that she was hanging by a Cord fastened through a Hole in
the Wainscot of the Room [..] that Wisham cut her down
that she appeared quite dead

Sarah Wife of John Uanderwell< no role > of No. 1 little Mage Court
Southwark Taylor maketh oath that the deced and her husband
(who is a journey man Currier ) have lodged in a one pair of stairs
Room in Deponents house six Weeks. That during the time the
[..] deced & her husband have lodged at Depts they have
often cried and expressed great anxilty & regret on account
of a Child they sayed had been accidentally burned to Death
a little while before they came to lodge at Depts house.
that the deced in particular used often to cry about it
& express great sorrow & Dept. often thought that she was
deranged on account there of that the deced the drank ten
with Dept. abot. six oClock last Night & after ten went up
to her Room that she came down soon after & asked Dept. for
after Iron which Dept. desired he to take. that she went
up Stair to her Room & soon after Dept. heard something
