Southwark

An Inquisition Indented taken for our Sovereign Lord the King at the Parish of
Saint John within the Borough of Southwark in the County of Surrey on the ninth day
day of October in the thirty fifth Year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third
by the grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the
faith and so forth before Thomas Shelton< no role > Gentleman Coroner of our said Lord the King
for the City of London and Borough of Southwark on view of the body of Edward
Murphy now< no role > here lying dead by the oath of William Goddard< no role > Josiah Norman William
Barklamb John Foot< no role > George Phillips< no role > Benjamin Poole< no role > William Palmer< no role > John Farmer< no role > Charles
Irwin Samuel Lewis< no role > Thomas Haines< no role > James James< no role > Thomas Shott Charles Shann and
Thomas Bonney< no role > good and lawful men of the Borough of Southwark aforesaid who being
now here duly chosen sworn and charged to inquire for our said Lord the King when how and
in what manner the said Edward Murphy< no role > came to his death say upon their oath that the
said Edward Murphy< no role > on the seventh day of October in the year aforesaid being in a certain
publick street and Kings common highway there called New street situate in the Parish aforesaid
within the Borough & County aforesaid and between a certain cart and the corner of a certain
Court in the said street called Fountain Court and a certain person whose name to the Jurors
aforesaid is unknown being driving a certain other Cart drawn by two house along
and through the said street and common highway there It so happened that the said
last mentioned Cart accidentally Casually and by misfortune struck against the first
mentioned Cart and forced the Same to and against the said Edward Murphy< no role > by means
whereof the said Edward Murphy< no role > was then and there forced to the ground there and the head
of the said Edward Murphy< no role > was then and there violently Jammed and crushed between
the tail of the said first mentioned cart and the wall of the corner of the said Court by
reason thereof the said Edward Murphy< no role > did then and there receive one mortal bruise
and fracture in and upon his said head of which said mortal bruise and fracture
he the said Edward Murphy< no role > then and there instantly died. And so the Jurors aforesaid
do say that the said Edward Murphy< no role > in manner and by the means aforesaid
accidentally casually and by misfortune came to his death and not otherwise
In witness whereof as well the said Coroner as the said William Goddard< no role > the Foreman
of the said Jurors on behalf of himself and the rest of his fellows in their presence have to
this Inquisition set their hands and seals the day year and place first abovewritten.
