Southwark

Depositions of Witnesses taken at the
Workhouse of Saint Olave in the Parish of
Saint John within the Borough of Southwark
in the County of Surrey this 18th: day of
December 1794 on view of the Body of
Rebecca Cane< no role > now here lying Dead

Philip Thompson< no role > of No. 76 Aldgate High Street in the Parish
of St. Botolph without Aldgate London Butcher maketh oath
that about six O'Clock on Tuesday Evening last Dept.beingwas on
Horseback having just come over London Bridge & turned down [..] passing along by St. Olave Church Tooley Street
in order to go to Walworth That a Cart drawn by two Horses were
going down Tooley Street just before Dept. that he Horses neare going
a Walking pace that it was very dark and foggy that just as
the Cart came opposite St. Olaves Church [..] Dept. saw something
fallDept.in the Middle of the Street a little before the Cart which
Dept. thought was something that had fallen from another
Cart that was then passing towards Dept. that soon after
the Off Wheel of the Cart before Dept.wentappeared gooverover what Dept.
had seen fall as before mentd.that after the Cart had
passed on Dept. went to the place and found it to be a Woman
that it was then very Dark Dept. went after the Driver of
the Cart asked him to stop asked him if hehadknew he
had drove over a Woman & had killed her on the spot the
Driver sayed "No he did'nt know any such thing that the
Driver was then on the Near side of his Horses the Horses then
going a walking place only Dept. returned to the deced found
her in the middle of the street lying [..] upon her side her face
rather downwards sevl. people round he with Lights that
she was quite dead her Head crushed to pieces almost
