Having been informed that a Special Committee of
Governors were to meet this day to deliberate upon various
matters which have reference to the great Sewer now filling
up, and the valuable Hospital Estates as connected therewith,
-the tenants of the Hospital who occupy those premises,
and who are many of them Governors, being extremely
desirous of contributing all the information and assistance
in their power on so interesting an occasionhad the
Sewer carefully surveyed yesterday by Messrs Samuel
Wyatt
< no role > and George Gwilt< no role > two Surveyors of established
reputationwhose report in consequence is now enclosed

And they trust that the Governors will see the propriety
of coming to some resolution thereon, and of transmitting
the same along with this report and that of the Hospital
Surveyor-this day to the Commissioners of Servers; who,
being delegated by, and in this instance representatives
of, the Corporation of London are clearly bound to fill
up the old Sewer so, that it will be a sufficient and
permanent Security for the lofty Buildings over and
adjoining the same.It is well known that the 29th
Geo 2d obliged the City of London to make a good and
sufficient Sewer and Arch; and their Bridge Committee
directed their Surveyor and Clerk to Certify to the
Governors of Bridewell in May 1779 that they had
been so made in the best manner; and that they were fit
and adequate to support the lofty Buildings intended by
the Hospital to be constructed thereon. This was plainly
intended as an inducement to build, and the Governors
acted upon it. The Corporation were moreover bound
by the 29 Geo: 2 to maintain and keep in repair the
