Artsmasters Petition
rejected

Upon Reading the Petition of Thomas Reynolds< no role > ,
Thomas Dunn< no role > Robert Lemare< no role > , and John Sanders< no role > four of the
Artsmasters in this Hospital in the words and figures following
Vizt." That your Petitioners being Anxious for the dignity and
welfare of this Charitable foundation, and for the poor Youth
placed there in under your Inspection, have with the greatest
Deference to your Worships offered the following for your
ConsiderationThat your Worships will be pleased to Enquire
whether the Candidates offering themselves to fill the Vacancy of
a Broad weaver are realy so, by serving a regular Apprenticeship
thereto; doubts having arisen in the minds of your Petitioners
concerning one of the present Candidates, do most humbly submit
to your Worships, whether it is not essentially necessary, that those
who have the Care of the Apprentices in your Hospital should not
themselves have served a regular Apprenticeship in Order fully to
Instruct them in the true Art and Mystery of that Business which
they follow, Your Petitioners humbly think, that a Master, who
has no legal right by Servitude can be a proper Person to
superintend the Apprentices placed under his Care & Protection
or is it possible such a Master can properly Instruct such Youths
particularly, in the Art or Mystery of a weaver. " This Court
having duly weighed and considered the said Petition is opinion
that the said Arts masters have behaved very improperly as it does
not Appear that there is any foundation in Truth for what they
have set forth in their said Petition and a Motion being made
and seconded and the Question put, that the said Thomas
Reynolds
< no role > , Thomas Dunn< no role > , Robert Lemare< no role > , and John Sanders< no role > be
reprimanded it was carried in the Affirmative and there upon
they were called into Court and reprimanded by Mr. President
Accordingly.

Upon Reading a Report from the Committee of this
House dated 24th. April Instant under the Hands of Nathaniel
Thomas
< no role > Esquire Alderman treasurer , Nicholas Nixon< no role > Esquire
