Continued Thursday 25th. June 1772

such Additional Aid there remained an Arrear of £20 due to Mr Packer
the then Chapel Warden which Sum was borrowed at Interest to discharge
himThat the Inhabitants of the Hospital and Precinct being
Intimidated from Serving the Office of Chapel Warden and Overseer
owing to the large Sum of £73 (besides the said Borrowed Sum of £20
and Interest) due to Mr Challiner Mr Packers Successor, 13 Fines were
paid from the Inhabitants of the Hospital and Precinct next in Turn to
Serve to be Excused from Serving that Office which amounted to £65 And
notwithstanding the Receipt of that Sum there remained due to Mr Challiner
£8 and upwards besides the said borrowed Sum and Interest which
remains unpaidThat the Petitioners had made an Additional Rate
of 1s. in the Pound On all and every the Inhabitants of the said Hospital
and Precinct And at a Vestry held the 19th. May last when the said
Additional Rate was made it was Calculated Supposing the Expences
the same as the last Year that there would be at the End of the present
Year a Sum of £30 or upwards due to the present Chapel Wardens
Exclusive of the £20 and Interest Which Arrear the Petrs. thought would
be Chiefly owing to the Decrease of Artsmasters and the Houses in the
Precinct Amounting to 13 in Number being pulled down or in Ruins
Uninhabited and not Rateable And thereby Praying such Additional
Aid also the governors should Seem Meet This Committee are of
Opinion that the Steward should continue to pay the Sum of £6 P
Quarter for the Poors Rate as Usual And that he should also pay the
further Sum of £36 to make up the whole £60 for this Year only All
which is Submitted to the Judgment of the Court This Court
having duly Weighed and Considered the said Report doth
unanimously Confirm the same

Gratuity of £40


A Motion being made that in regard to the Extraordinary
diligence of Mr. John Brown< no role > the Porter of this Hospital a Gratuity
be given him for his good Services for the Time past And the Sum of
£40 being proposed and the Question put It is Ordered that the
Clerk do pay the said John Browne< no role > £40 to be Allowed him in his
next Account

Gratuities to Beadles and
Porters Man £5 Each


Upon Reading the Humble Petition of the 4 Beadles & Porters
Man of this Hospital for their Gratuities of £5 each for the half Year
at Christmas last (their Salaries being Small) It is Ordered that
the Clerk do give and Pay unto them £5 each to be allowed to him
in his next Account

Mr. treasurer Reported that Mr. John Tristram< no role > deceased by Will
bearing date the 5th. day of April 1771 Gave 100 Guineas to the
Incurables of Bethlem Hospital

Mr. Treasr. Reported that Mr. Thos. Gamull deceased by Will bearing
date the 1st. day of January last Gave £100 to the Incurables of
Bethlem Hospital .
