one
of the Artsmasters of this Hospital was read settingforthThat he has been
an Artsmaster
near 30 Years that there has constantly been another Hempdresser
in the Hospital besides him and that they have employd the Prisoners equally between
'em and used to pay 4d. P day for a Mans Labour and 2d P day for a Woman untill
the 29th. of March 1723 when the Court made an Order for the Hempdressers
to pay
6d. P day for the labour of a Man & 3d. for a Woman Boy or GirlThat suite
the death
of

) which was
in May 1728 the Petr. has employd all the Prisoners whereby he has been a great
Sufferer and was obliged to find Hemp for 'em to work on the he had Hemp enough
by him ready beatThat he has lost by the Prisoners Labour from ye. 29th. of
June 1729 to ye. 14th. of March last above £16. and he finds that he cannot employ
all the Prisoners that are sent hither at ye. prices he pays for the same and that
he has all along kept a sufficient number of ApprenticesAnd praying an
allowance for the money he has been out of Pocket by the Prisoners Labour price
the said Steads death and that the prices may be reduced as formerly to 4d for the
labour of a Man and 2d for a Woman Boyer GirlThis Comittee having
considerd the said Petition are of Opinion that the prices shoud be reducd accordingly
and that the said Mr. Waldo from Midsumer day next do pay only 4d P day
for the labour of a Man and 2d. for a Woman Boy or Girl All which
nevertheless is submitted to the Judgment of the Court And it is Ordered that
this Opinion be reported to the next CourtThis Court doth Confirm
the said Report and Order that the prices for ye Prisoners Labour be
reduced accordingly.
To enquire what Labour Prisoners
do at other Workhouses & what paid}
The Porter of this Hospital acquainted the Court That one Johnson
late a Prisoner here had informd him That he had several times earnd more in a day
then the Hempdresser
paid for his Labour Whereupon It is Ordered
That the Comittee of this Hospital de desired to inquire what Labour the
Prisoners do at other Workhouses and what paid or allowd for the same and
in what manner.
