The Clerk of then Hosplls. Accquainting this Court of the Proceeding
relating to Benjn. Ruth his wife and three Children upon the
Act of parliament made the Third and fourth of King Willm
and Queen Mary vizt. That the Sd. Benjn. Ruth in the Years
1684 being putt Apprentice to one William Smith< no role >
Hempdresser an Artsmaster of this Hospll. after haveing
served Seaven years went to the parish of Clerkenwell
where he marryed Aved 7 years and had three Children
born in the said Parish that 5th Septr. 1699 Wm. withers< no role > Esqr
& Joseph Short< no role > Esqr. two of the Justices of the peace for the
County of Middx (Quorum mind) by their Warrt. or pass
setting forth That it appearing to them upon ye. Examination
of Sd. Benjn. Ruth on Oath That he served an Apprenticespp
wth. willm Smith Hempdresser in Bridewell Pr.cinct in -
the Citty of London And from yt. suite had not gainedary
Legall Sittlemt. elsewhere They the Sd. Justices did by their sd
warrt. or pass Require all Constables Church wardens etc.
to pass remove & Convey ye. Sd. Benjn. Ruth his wife & three
Children out of the Sd. parish of St. James Clerkenwell
to the Precinct of Bridewell

That there upon by the Advice of St. Barth Showers
Mr. Comon Sr. Yt. Cripe & Mr. Munday the Sd. Hospll &
Precniet of Bredewell did appeal from the Sd. Order to
the next Quarter Sessions where by their Councell they
Jusited That it was above Eight yeares Since the sd.
Benjn. Ruth Served his Sd. Apprenticespp wth. the sd. Willm
Smith
< no role > an Artsmaster of the Sd. Hosptl That the Sd. Benjn:
Ruth was taken in upon the Charity of the Sd. Hospll: who
found him Clothes all the time of his Apprenticespp
and had him made Free of the Citty of London Gratis
and gave him Tenn pounds to Sett up wth. And that these
Ruth was not ways chargeable to the sd. Parish of
Clerkenwell haveing by his owne Labour hitherto
maintained his sd. wife & Children And further that the
sd. hospll. and precinct and the Instant there of are not
lyable to any parish Dutyes having never had any
publick rates either for Church or poore nor any
Chapple Wardens or other Officers Saree Such as are
appointed by the Presedt. accd Governrs. in Court yearly
