That at the General Quarter Session of the peace held<lb></lb>
for this County in the Month of October 1779 Your Petitioner was<lb></lb>

Appointment and long before the average Number of Prisoners<lb></lb>

were about 40. and upon an average<lb></lb>

<p n="13">That Your Petitioner is allowed a Sallary of £70.<lb></lb>
a Year and that the rest of the emoluments of his Office arise<lb></lb>
from the fees paid by persons discharged out of his Custody either<lb></lb>
by Warrant of a Magistrate or upon the expiration of the Sentence<lb></lb>
under which they are Committed and for the Use of Beds within<lb></lb>
the Goal.</p>
<p n="14">That heretofore the <rs type="occupation" id="LMSMPS50732_occ10">Keeper of the Prison</rs>
<interp inst="LMSMPS50732_occ10" type="occupation" value="Keeper of the Prison"></interp>
had the<lb></lb>
Benefit arising from the sale of Victuals and Liquor at the Tap<lb></lb>
but now these advantages an in the Hands of another.</p>
<p n="15">That the Persons generally committed to <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50732_geo26">New<lb></lb>
Prison</rs>
<interp inst="LMSMPS50732_geo26" type="placeName" value="NewPrison"></interp>
<interp inst="LMSMPS50732_geo26" type="type" value="undefined"></interp>
are persons suspected of felony or of high misdemeanors<lb></lb>
or who an Guilty thereof and are frequently in the most distressed<lb></lb>
circumstances and not able to pay any fees whatever.</p>
<p n="16">That since the late Riots, and the distruction of<lb></lb>
the <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50732_geo27">Gaol of Newgate</rs>

the Number of Prisoners in Your Petitioners<lb></lb>
Custody have been upon an average 150 or more and are daily<lb></lb>
increasing, 80 or 90 of which have been for Trial at one<lb></lb>
