<p n="2518">Gentlemen</p>
<p n="2519">I think it a Duty incumbent on me<lb></lb>
to lay before the Court the very unhealthy state of<lb></lb>
the Prisoners for some time past both in the House of<lb></lb>
Correction and <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMGO55611_geo1719">New Prison</rs>

<interp inst="LMSMGO55611_geo1719" type="type" value="undefined"></interp>
<rs type="placeName" id="LMSMGO55611_geo1720">Clerkenwell</rs>

, Several have<lb></lb>
Laboured under the same kind of Fever that is so<lb></lb>
prevalent througout the Town the more Particularly<lb></lb>
in the Habitations of the poor within or adjoining<lb></lb>
the City in many instances the Infection has Extended<lb></lb>
to every Inmate and Proved in many Places very<lb></lb>
Fatal it being of the Putrid and Malignant Kind<lb></lb>
I have the Pleasing Satisfaction to say that out of<lb></lb>
about Thirty Persons in the two Prisons and Several<lb></lb>
of them in the Worst stage of Disease and having<lb></lb>
Severe Venereal Complaint Itch Etc. on them at the<lb></lb>
same time, none have Died, the Nurse's at Cosh<lb></lb>
Prisons who attended on the Sick received the Infection<lb></lb>
and nearby proved fatal to them both, at present<lb></lb>
the Prisoners in <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMGO55611_geo1721">Clerkenwell Prison</rs>
<interp inst="LMSMGO55611_geo1721" type="placeName" value="Clerkenwell Prison"></interp>
<interp inst="LMSMGO55611_geo1721" type="type" value="undefined"></interp>
are free from<lb></lb>
Disease but in the House of Correction five have fell<lb></lb>
ill Since the Meeting of the last Committee, tho'<lb></lb>
every means has been taken to prevent it extending<lb></lb>
among the Prisons by placing the Sick in apartments<lb></lb>
by themselves having them Washed twice a Day with<lb></lb>
Vinegar mixed with Water using fumigations with<lb></lb>
Jar, Vinegar Gunpowder Etc. Etc. - It may not be<lb></lb>
improper to remark that this Fever has not arose<lb></lb>
from any unhealthy situation of the Prisons or for<lb></lb>
want of Cleanliness among the Prisoners, for I am<lb></lb>
fully of opinion that the state of the atmosphere must<lb></lb>
undoubtedly caused the Great extention and aggrivated<lb></lb>
