the Geneva Houses}</note>
In pursuance of an Order made in the last Quarter Sessions held<lb></lb>
for this County, whereby it was referred to us, among others,<lb></lb>
to inquire into the number of houses and places, within such<lb></lb>
parts of this Town and County as are therein mentioned,<lb></lb>
where Geneva and other Strong Waters are sold by retail, and<lb></lb>
the mischeifs occasioned thereby. Wee whose names are<lb></lb>
Subscribed, do hereby certify, That by the returns of the High<lb></lb>
and <rs type="occupation" id="LMSMGO55600_occ378">petty Constables</rs>

, made upon their Oath, It appears,<lb></lb>
there are within the weekly Bills of Mortality, and such<lb></lb>
other parts of this County, as are now by the Contiguity of<lb></lb>
Buildings become part of this Town, (exclusive of London<lb></lb>
and <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMGO55600_geo224">Southwark</rs>

) Six Thousand one Hundred and Eighty<lb></lb>
Seaven Houses and Shopps, wherein Geneva or other strong<lb></lb>
Waters are publickly sold by retail. And altho this Numbers<lb></lb>
is exceeding great, and farr beyond all proportion to the<lb></lb>
reall wants of the Inhabitants, (being in some parishes<lb></lb>
every Tenth House, in others every seventh, and in one of<lb></lb>
the largest every Fifth house) Wee have great reason to<lb></lb>
beleive, It is very short of the True number, there being<lb></lb>
none returned, but such who sell publickly in Shopps of<lb></lb>
Houses, tho'' tis known, there are many others, who sell by<lb></lb>
retail, even in the Streets and Highways some on Bulks<lb></lb>
and Stalls setup for that purpose, and others in<lb></lb>
Wheelbarrows, who are not returned, and many more who<lb></lb>
sell privately in Garretts Sellars Backrooms and other places,<lb></lb>
not publickly exposed to view, and which thereby escaped<lb></lb>
the notice of our Officers. And yet there have been a<lb></lb>
Considerable number lately suppress'd or obliged to leave off.<lb></lb>
by the Justices within their parishes, tho' this has prov'd of<lb></lb>
no effect, having only served to drive those, who before were<lb></lb>
used to these Liquors, into greater Shops, which are now to<lb></lb>
be seen full of poor people from morning to night But in<lb></lb>
this number of Six Thousand one hundred and eighty seven,<lb></lb>
are included such Victuallers, who sell Geneva or other</p>
