<p n="2523">is intended to fill up the remainder of the Sewer to the<lb></lb>
River, in the same manner.</p>
<p n="2524">On examining the Walls and Arch of the said Sewer<lb></lb>
between William Street and the Thames, we find many<lb></lb>
Settlements, Cracks, Bulges, and Defects; whereby the Houses<lb></lb>
adjoining to and immediately over the Sewer, will be left in<lb></lb>
an insecure and precarious State, unless some other mode<lb></lb>
be adopted, than filling it up merely with rubbish. We<lb></lb>
are therefore decidedly of Opinion, that there should be Walls<lb></lb>
built across the Sewer from the Bed or Bottom to the springing<lb></lb>
of the Arch; that such Walls should be of the thickness of<lb></lb>
three bricks at the least, erected at certain Intervals; but more<lb></lb>
particularly under the principal Walls of the respective buildings<lb></lb>
beginning at Mr Schneiders and continued to the River; that the<lb></lb>
said Walls should be formed to act as Buttresses against the Old<lb></lb>
Walls of the Sewer, with an inverted Arch at the Top; the<lb></lb>
abutments to be constructed with large stone Corbels let into the<lb></lb>
old Walls, whereby the Weight of the Superstructures may be<lb></lb>
relieved; And that when the said Walls are built, the Interstices<lb></lb>
should be filled up with Rubbish. And moreover; we are of<lb></lb>
Opinion that nothing short of the precaution above suggested,<lb></lb>
will be a sufficient and permanent Security for the Buildings<lb></lb>
over and adjoining to the said Sewer.</p>
<p n="2525">And having been further desired to consider of the best<lb></lb>
and most adviseable plan of making seperate drains to the<lb></lb>
Houses over and near to the Sewer, in lien of those they enjoy at<lb></lb>
present; we recommend a Culvert or Circular drain, of about<lb></lb>
three feet diameter, to be made within the old Sewer from William<lb></lb>
Street to the River; in preference to making the private drains<lb></lb>
from each House to communicate with the New Sewer, as<lb></lb>
mentioned in the Act; We being of Opinion that such drain<lb></lb>
may be formed with greater facility and at less expence; and<lb></lb>
at the same time with greater convenience to the Inhabitants</p>
