26. Thomas Gilbert proceedingsdefend , was indicted for stealing fourteen Pound Weight of Sugar, value 2 s. the Goods of Persons unknown, Oct. 23 .

(a King's Watchman) The Prisoner was employed by a Merchant to watch a Lighter of Sugar, I saw him come out of the Skuttle Hole with a Bundle; I asked him what he had got there; he said his Bed; I thought it was too little for a Bed, and it proved to be Sugar: I went down to the Lighter, and found a Hogshead broke open; I believe this to be part of it.

Edward Lawrence < no role > (Constable) the Prisoner said the Mate of the Ship gave it him.

Mary Tovey < no role > , Mary Birch < no role > , and Margaret Birch < no role > , have known the Prisoner several Years, gave him the Character of a very honest Man, that he had a large Family, and always had the Character of an industrious Man. Guilty .
