Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Austin lodging at No.6 in Langley Street in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 13th Day of November in the year 1781. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 43 years of age, that she never was married (except to James Reynolds at Lincoln Inn Chapel after the manner of the Church of Rome about 16 years ago), that she was a yearly hired servant to Barnard Noble an Upholder [sic] near the bottom of Long Acre in the said Parish for the space of two years and an half at the yearly wages of 4 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about 16 years ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was seven years ago delivered at the house of Charles Spires in Middlesex Court in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields of a Male bastard child (since christened Henry) yet living and is likely to become chargeable to the said Parish, and also that she was on the six-day of January 1736 delivered at the said house of Mr Spires of a female bastard child (since christened Ann) yet living and he is likely to become chargeable to the said Parish, and that the said James Reynolds who is gone to sea did beget on her body the said Male and female to bastard children and that he the said James Reynolds is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the 13th Day of November 1781 before Thomas Bullard, William Hyde.
