James Marchant< no role > of Barret Court Marylebone Foreman
to the Contractor for Lighting the Lamps in the Parish
of St. James Westmr . on his Oath saith, That he is Frequently
out at Night to see that the Lamps burn properly Says
that a little after two o' Clock yesterday Morning he
went with three other Men to the Watch house of St. James's
Parish , and hearing a Noise in the Watchhouse
he went in the Door not being Locked and as he Entered he saw the Deced
having Quart Pewter Pot Body, Says thata Gentleman
Servantthe Deced either fall or [..] down in the Watchhouse upon the Floor, That one of
the Men there said, Damkis Blood he has Murdered the Man
says that he lifted up the Deced, and on seeing Hinton
the Beadle leaning down upon a Bench and bleeding
down the Facethis Dept. and [..] othertwo men in the
Watchhouse Forced the Deced (who was willing to go)
to the top of the Stairs, and Deced walking down himself
into a Room below and Dept. bolted the Door leaving the
Deced there, Says that he went up Stairs and was
washing a Wound upon the back Part Mr. Hinton's Head
with water when Mr. Brown the Lauthorn bearer came into
the Watchhouse, and on the People saying that Hinton
was Murdered, Brown took a pair of Handcuffs downstairs
and returned in about two Minutes saying that he had
put them upon the Deced's Hands, Says that Brown and
two or three other Men went down Stairs again in about
ten Minutes to see how the Deced was and immediately
cryed out that the Deced had got the Handcuffs off, upon
which this Dept. went down & saw that the Deced had got
one Hand out of the Handkerchief and one of his Arms out
of his Great Coat Sleeve, That Brown then said Ill manage
him I warrant you, upon which one of the Men started
back, saying that the Deced had got a Knife, and another
Man immediately took a pair of Scissors out of the Deced's
right Hand, Says that Brown then with a large Cord tied the
Deced,s [..] behind him, and the Deced was left there
and the Door Bolted. That they went up Stairs, and in
about Ten Minutes Brown went down to see how the
Deced

Deced was, Says that he did not hear the Room Door
where the Deced was open, and believes that he did not
go into the Room , That Brown came up in about a
Minute, Saying that the Deced was assleep upon the Bench
and was very safe, Says that in about half an hour or less
this Dept. was going home, and one of the Men said, Let
us go down and see the man, upon which Brown and
three or Four more went down Stairs, and immediately
upon their going into the Room, they cryed out, that the
Man was dead, upon which the Dept. went down and saw
the Deced Hanging with his Head leaning to the left side by a Core which was put around
the [..] yard Iron Bar [..] of the Window and under the
Deced's Chin, whether it was around the Deced's Neck
or not Dept. cannot tell, Says that Brown by Dept. desire
with a Knife cut the Cord by which the Deced's was Hanging
and Dept. was laid upon the Ground, being dead, And
this Deponent verily believes that the Deced Hanged
himself. And says that Mr. Hinton on bearing informed
that the Deced was dead, said Dam his Blood he is gone
to Hell.

Thomas Brown< no role > Lanthorn bearer to the Parish of St.
James Westmr . on his Oath saith That he went into the
Watchhouse about [..] two o Clock yesterday Morning
and heard the Constable order Mr. Hinton to bring up the
Deced which was done immediately, Says that he went
out and returned to the Watchhouse in about a Quarter
of an hour and was [..] informed that the Deced
had Struck Mr Hinton with a Quart Pot, and that he
was put into a Room below and one of the Man desired
this Dept. to Handcuffe the Deced which Dept. did
and Deced was left there and the Door Fastened,
Says that in about Ten Minutes this Dept. and several
others went down to see the Deced, when the Deced
had got one of his Hands out of the Handcuffe and
his Arm out of the Great Coatsleave,Says that
he
