An Inquisition Indented, taken for our Sovereign Lord the
King, at the Parish of St. Margaret
within the Liberty of the Dean and Chapter of the Collegiate Church St. Peter, Westminster ,
in the County of Middlesex , the Twenty ninth day of June in the Twelfth Year
of the Regin of our Sovereign Lord GEORGE the Third, by the Grace of God, of Great-Britain,
France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth, before Thomas Prickard< no role > , Gentleman ,
Coroner of our said Lord the King for the said City and Liberty, on View of the Body of
James Payne< no role > then and there lying dead, upon the Oath of William
Mott
< no role > , Edmund Dunn< no role > , John Osgood Lane< no role > , Thomas Wheeler< no role > , Valentine Fitzgerald< no role > , John

and Daniel Barrett< no role > good and lawful Men of the said Liberty, duly
chosen, who being then and there duly sworn and charged to enquire for our said Lord the
King, when, how, and by what Means the said James Payne< no role > came to
his Death, do upon their Oath say, That the said James Payne< no role > on the Nineteenth day
of June in the Year aforesaid being want only and for diversion Walking upon
the North side of Westminster Bridge , on the Outside of the Ballastrades, in the
Parish aforesaid within the Liberty and County aforesaid, and then and
there looking at two Men swim in the River Thames , It so happened
that one of the feet of the said James Payne< no role > then and there slipped, and that
the said James Payne< no role > Accidentally Casually and by Misfortune fell off and
from the said Bridge, on the outside of the Ballastrades, into a certain Boat
floating upon the River Thames near the West End of the said Bridge, and
thereby did then and there receive one mortal Fracture in and upon his Right
Leg, and one mortal Concussion in and upon the Brain of him the said James
Payne
< no role > , of which said mortal Fracture and Concussion he the said James Payne< no role >
from the said NIneteenth day of June in the Year aforesaid until the Twenty seventh
day of the same Month and year, at the Parish and in the Liberty and County
aforesaid did languish and languishing did live, on which said Twentyseventh
day of June aforesaid, at the Parish and in the Liberty and County aforesaid
he the said James Payne< no role > of the mortal Fracture and Concussion aforesaid,
did dye. And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their Oath aforesaid, do say,
that the said James Payne< no role > in Manner and by the Means aforesaid, Accidentally
Casually and by Misfortune came to his death, and not otherwise
In Witnesses whereof as well the said Coroner as the said William
Mott

Fellows, in their presence, have to this Inquisition set their Hands and
Seals the Day Year and Place first above written
