in the County of Midsex }


Informations taken this Twenty sixth day of
March 1770 at the Parish of St. John the Evangelist
within the City & Liberty of Westmr. in the County of
Middlesex upon an Inquisition touching the Death
of William Gregory< no role > lying dead in the said Parish
City Liberty and County.

John Scotland< no role > a Watchman of the Parish of St. John the Evangt.
Westmr . on his Oath saith That when he was calling the hour
of two this Morning William Gregory< no role > the Deced came to him
at the Kings Arms near the End of College Street and asked him
for a piece of Candle saying, that he had been to light a Gent
up the Strand and that his Candle was burnt out, Says, that
he gave Deced a bit of Candle about two inches in line [..] and
directed him to go up the Horse Ferry Road in order
to get to his own Walk (being a Watchman in the Broadway
Westmr; and appeared to be then in Liquor) Says that he
went towards the Horn Herry, after lighting his Candles and
Dept. has not seen him since

James Partridge< no role > Lighter man on his Oath saith That
he was on Board a Lime Barge lying at Mill Bank on
the River Thames last night, Says that he was walking upon
Deck between three and four this Morning and heard
a Noise in the Thames as if something had fallen into the Thames
near a Sluice by Mr. Pearce's Brewhouse on Mill Bank,
but Dept. did not see any Body or hear any Person cry out,
Says that about a Quarter after five o'Clock this Morning
a Faggot Bargeman and this Dept. saw the Deced lying
dead in the Sluice, the Tide being then going out he was
almost dry, & that they found A Lanthorn near the Deced,
Says that he observed no Marks of violence upon the Deced
That he believes the Deced fall into the Water when he
first heard the Noise between three and four o'Clock and
believes that he accidentally fell in and was Drowned
and says that several Men some time after lifted the
Deced out of the Shine.
