Informations taken this Fourteenth day
of February 1770 at the Parish of St. Paul
Covent Garden within the Liberty of Westmr.
in the County of Middlesex upon an Inquisition
touching the Death of Leyton Clarke< no role > lying
Lead in the said Parish Liberty and County.

Joseph Stephenson< no role > one of the Constables of the parish
of St. Martin in the Fields on his Oath saith, That he
usually attends at Covent Garden Playhouse very
Evening to keep the peace, Says that he attended on
Monday Evening last about half an hour after five o Clock
and being at the foot of the Stairs of the twelve penny
Gallery, was called down, and told by Mrs. Holloway
that a Man was thrown over the Rail and killed
Says that he saw the Deced lye in the Passage about
three Yards from the Pit door, That Mrs. Holloway sheeved
Dept. a Man (who was going up to the two shilling Gallery)
and said that he threw the Deced down, upon which
the took the Man into Custody, who name is John Hunt< no role > ,
and took him before Sir John Fielding< no role > , who directed
Dept. to go to see for the Deced whom he found on
the inside of the Pit door of the Play house, Says that
he took hold of the Deced's Arm and another Person
had hold of the other Arm, and lad the Deced along the
Passage to the Stage door, and there Dept. asked the Deced
if any Person had thrown him down the Stairs,
to which Deced answered that he fell down himself,
Says that he left the Deced there, and went to
Acquaint Sir John therewith, Says that the Deced
was some time after brought to Sir John's Office but
was not able to speak, Says that the Deced slept about
an hour and half there, after which Sr. John ordered
him to be taken to the Brown Bear in Bow Street
where Dept. saw him about Eleven o Clock that
Evening, when he appeared to be asleep, Says that
he went home, and about Twelve o Clock was told that
